How Technology Affects Our Everyday Lives

Technology affects our lives in a major way by changing the way we go about everything today. You have no idea where you are because you’re lost. You casually pull out your phone and open Google Maps. As soon as you’re done punching in your destination, a computer voice begins to speak and starts giving you directions to where you should go. You follow this emotionless voice because you’re used to it. Soon, you reach your destination, paying no mind to what happened because it’s normal to use the GPS. Admit it; we’ve all done this before. We’re surrounded by technology, whether we realize it or not. Technology affects our everyday lives, both positively and negatively. We are so dependent on technology, that even for the most menial tasks, that it’s almost like they are commands that we are programmed to follow. There are many ways that technology changes our everyday activities.

An example of technology changing our lives is how we communicate. Communication is everywhere; from business proposals to video games. Business proposals use communication, and now, so do video games. Gamers can often chat while playing the video game. Communication has changed a great deal with modern technology. For example, before modern technology, to communicate,  people would write and send letters, or meet in person. In present times, rarely anybody sends letters. Most communications nowadays are conducted using cell phone calls or text messages, and if formal communication is needed, then e-mails are used. The article “How Technology is Changing Communication” by The Yale Tribune says “Advancements made in technology and changes in communication generally go hand in hand. Landlines displaced the telegraph and cell phones replaced landlines. The arrival of the internet opened new doors of personal communication. E-mails replaced postal mails…” In short, communication has evolved and changed throughout time, and all forms of communication have been altered by technology.

Another example of technology affecting our lives is education. Not only has technology changed the way that institutes teach, but also the way that other things are learned. In many ways, this is a positive influence on the world. For instance, before technology, if one wanted to learn how to cook a certain dish, they might have needed to purchase several cookbooks explaining the recipe on how to cook the dish. However, thanks to technology platforms such as YouTube, one could search the recipe of the dish and cook it, while being able to see which ingredients are needed and how the dish should look like throughout the recipe. This is a helpful tool for society, and it can save on many costs that may have been needed in the past. According to the article “How technology can improve education” by Classcraft, electronic education can save money. It further explains “Districts can save money on paper by using more electronic documents. Emails can replace many of the papers that were once sent home to parents. Teachers can upload assignments to Google Classroom or learning management systems instead of using copiers to print out packets of materials.” In summary, eLearning can save costs on many materials that educational institutes may have needed to buy. Also, it can help instructors teach in a better way. If homework was assigned on paper, then a student could easily complete the assignment in class without the teacher knowing. However, if an online learning management system is used, then educators would know which students finished their assignments in time and which students did not. Online learning management systems often have a due date that has been set by the admin of the learning system. If assignments are not finished inside this time limit, then the assignment is marked missing and the admin receives a notification. Similarly, if a student submits the assignment late, then the system marks his or her’s assignment late for the admin. Therefore, technology can prove to be quite useful for education.

Technology changes our lives completely, and one of the major changes that have occurred is in the world of transportation. We all commute every day, whether it is from work to home, school to home, or any destination to another. Transportation has changed a great deal due to the quickly-developing advancements in technology. Long ago, people used to commute on foot or on horseback. Later, coach wagons pulled by horses were used to commute. In the late 1800s, when the first cars were invented, they did not even have roofs! Then, as years passed by, other forms of transportation arrived, such as trains, buses, etc., and cars evolved. In the next century, cars began to have closed roofs. Later, music players were added, and now, in present times, you can even play video games and watch movies in cars! For navigation, physical maps were used to find a location, but in modern times, maps can be easily found on any electronic device. Another technological breakthrough has made commute much easier and faster. That breakthrough is the invention of the GPS, also known as the global positioning system. The GPS can tell you where you are using satellites that orbit the Earth. This helpful tool has proven to be extremely useful to humanity. Before the invention of GPS, people used to ask around for directions, but after GPS, people did not have to ask for directions anymore. For a GPS to work, a destination must be inputted. After the destination is inputted, the GPS locates your position and calculates the route from where you are to your destination. In the section “What are the uses of GPS?” in the article “What Is GPS?” by Geotab, it is stated, “GPS is a powerful and dependable tool for businesses and organizations in many different industries. . . GPS works at all times and in almost all weather conditions.” Due to its ability to function during all weather conditions, it is better than a map because, in case of rain, a map would easily get wet, but a GPS would continue to function. This shows that while technological changes continue to take place, they are helpful and contribute to our everyday lives.

All in all, technology is making major changes in our lives, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. These changes are helping us evolve as humans, and yes, while there may be negative effects, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. There are many ways that technology is changing our lives, and some of these are the way we communicate, the way we learn, and the way we travel.
